There was much excitement in Ilfracombe on Monday 21st May in anticipation of the Olympic Torch coming through our lovely town. Thousands of local residents lined the route from St Brannocks Road right through the High Street to Brimlands, excitedly waving their bunting and flags and to cheer on the lucky torchbearers as they passed through.
A carnival procession of huge lorries bearing the logos of the sponsors preceded the Torchbearers with music blaring and loud speakers anouncing that the Torch was nearly here.
Ilfracombe's own Olympic Champion and British Triple Jumper, Jonathan Edwards took up the mantle at Hillsborough Road and was given a warm welcome home by the cheering crowds as he ran carrying the Torch to Brimlands where the Junior school were spending the day at their own mini Olympics.
The Torch then left Ilfracombe and travelled through Hele before heading over to Combe Martin. However, the celebrations didn't stop when the Torch left town! It was a busy day at Brimlands as the Olympic Theme carried on in to the evening with local sporting teams taking part in a series of mini challenges over the course of the evening including a rowing, cricket and rugby.
